Manchester United Unlikely to Extend the Contract of David De Gea

Only a few weeks remain before the January transfer window opens up. There is a lot of gossip swirling around regarding who is moving where.

According to the reports, Manchester United might not activate the contract extension of David de Gea in the summer and will rather look for a new goalkeeper as the 2022-2023 season comes to an end. If reports are to be believed 32-year old Spain international is keen to remain at Old Trafford for 12 months more, and Erik ten Hag, United Boss is open to the idea of a new number one.

De Gea is one of the top shot-stoppers in the business and it has been proven several times. However, Ten Haag is reportedly on the lookout for a keeper who is more comfortable with the ball at his feet. It can make De Gea available for a free transfer when the present campaign comes to an end in 2023 May.

Man Utd signed De Gea for £19 million in 2011. He has become a reliable player in the squad who has grappled ever since Sir Alex Ferguson took retirement in 2013. Nevertheless, if the Spanish player is to move on, Manchester United will free up a considerable amount of their wage bill.

There have always been questions regarding De Gea’s position in the first team of Ten Hag. The playing style of the Dutchman revolves around keeping the ball in his possession and playing out from the back. The main weakness of De Gea is his inability to consistently help build up defense. Even though he has shown great improvements this season, it is to be if he can continue it for the rest of the season. De Gea is a shot-stopper and might be the best in the world.
